“Be positive. Be aggressive. Be brave.”

“Be positive. Be aggressive. Be brave.” These are the three ideas that underline the core values of the Celtic academy. A brief, yet valuable insight into these values was shown under the lights of Christie Park to the coaches of many top clubs in the North Western Sydney area. Led by Chris Smith and his team of coaches, the session consisted of two main parts: a presentation explaining Celtic’s values and philosophies, as well as their approach to coaching at an academy level, and an on-field display of various drills regularly conducted by teams within the Celtic academy.

The PowerPoint presentation provided a clear description of the structure and processes of Celtic as a club, by explaining a variety of key ethics and morals that the club, its staff, players, and fans pride themselves on. Keeping the Celtic structure in mind, Smith posed the question, “What would you (the coaches) do differently?” allowing the NWSF coaches to break off into small groups to discuss their ideas on any changes they would make to the Australian system. After granting the NWSF coaches a sufficient amount of time to discuss in each other’s groups, the coaches were offered to share their ideas, bringing to light the different views that each coach had, opening doors for interesting discussions between the NWSF and Celtic coaches. The presentation also delved into the non-footballing side of the club, by showing how members of staff such as psychologists, analysts, and physiotherapists all work in correlation with one another to make the club and their players as successful as they are.

The second part of the session progressed to a visual portrayal of Celtic’s scenario-based training. The scenario-based drills used by Celtic is a newly developed training program which involves testing players in in-game situations and focuses on individual player development. This system was designed by coaches within the Celtic academy to challenge players in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v2 situations, assisting in growing their skills from both an attacking and defensive perspective. With the help of the Gladesville Ravens’ under 16 women’s team, coach Scott Murray and Chris Smith were able to help NWSF coaches understand the benefits of this system, with both coaches digging deep to break down the tactical aspect of each drill, and successfully applying it into real-game scenarios.

Normanhurst Eagles Football Club ran their 2nd annual ADAPT Normo3s event on February 5th 2022. The program is a 1-day, fun-filled, 3-a-side football festival for girls from U5 to U14.

All Spirit FC Youth League players went down to Pennant Hills Oval to referee over 150 players competing in across 50 teams from local clubs Normanhurst Eagles FC, Pennant Hills FC and Roselea FC.

“The success of Normo 3s format comes from the small, sided games giving players lots of opportunity to be on the ball” reflected Nick Deverell, event organiser and Normanhurst Eagles FC Mini’s and Junior Coordinator.

“Our referees enjoyed supporting this event because the players were having fun with friends, and our referees were enjoying time together in a supportive environment for them” stated Izzy Corcoran, Spirit FC Coach.

“This was a great day out for our Spirit Youth League players, and even battles with the rainy weather didn’t stop them from smiling and enjoying themselves”

Roughly 150 Spirit FC players refereed across the course of the female focused event, showing their support for our grassroots community. The club looks to continue its support at these events in the future.

NWS Koalas FC and NWS Spirit FC are proud to officially announce the merging of both clubs for the 2022 winter season.

The new entity will see the unification of previously autonomous female and male football operations under the one banner of NWS Spirit Football Club and will continue to proudly display the Koala logo.

This a landmark time for the region and follows the recent merging of the North West Sydney Women’s Association and the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association to form North West Sydney Football Ltd.

"The vision was to pool resources to provide a best practice for both females and males"
- Tim Martin (previous NWS Koalas FC President and now Board member) stated.

“We are now looking as a collective to raise the standards and amenities, to provide a truly best practice environment and pathway for our players and coaches.” We are already realising the benefits of the combined thinking with our player pathways, strength and conditioning practices, and coach development; the future is looking very exciting” Martin added.

Frank Marchi (NWS Spirit FC chair) added that “the Club is very excited to work hand in hand with the local Association and the local community to establish itself as a force both on and off the park; especially as we further develop the home of North West Sydney Football at Christie Park..”

“Football at the NSW National Premier League level is very competitive and we are looking forward to our Club showcasing the region’s talent in the upcoming seasons.”
